ISO 18001
Organizations now understand that, in all situations, prevention through the implementation of a structured and effective system is far more appropriate than corrective methods used to cope with the unsafe condition and accidents. Therefore, most organizations need to develop a safety management system on a daily basis. In this regard, a standard occupational health and safety system was developed as the initial step. The first step that was taken in this field, i.e. the development of a standard occupational health and safety system, was the creation of the BS 8800:1996 standard by the British Standard Institute.
With the creation of this standard, the need for an international standard in this area became more apparent. As a result, the OHSAS 18001:1999 standard and its guide OHSAS 18002:1999 were prepared and compiled by some national standards organizations, including the Irish, South African, English, and Malaysian standards institutes and several international reputable companies for registration and issuance of certificates.
In response to customers’ urgent requests for a consistent, focused system of occupational health and safety that could be assessed and issued the necessary certificate, OHSAS 18000 was created.
What does “occupational health and safety” mean?
We recognize the conditions and factors that affect the health and comfort of employees, temporary or contract employees, visitors, and any other person in the work environment as occupational safety and health. These circumstances and elements change for each company depending on the nature of its activities. It should be noted that one of the most important system establishment activities in an organization is recognizing these conditions and variables.
